It is actually an established rule of thumb that the number on the left side of a multiplication sentence or problem represents the number of (vertical) rows in the problem while the number on the right side of a multiplication sentence or problem represents the number of (horizontal) columns. This doesn’t matter much when solving a multiplication problem by pencil and paper. Either way the answer is the same. When solving a multiplication problem via online sources, however, not respecting the established rule of thumb of rows on the left and columns on the right makes an otherwise accurate solution inaccurate.
