Most if not all instructors, particularly those who distribute syllabi to students/parents, articulate a weighted grading scale, or percentage values for categories of assignments in their classes. Amusingly, many do not appear to utilize the weighted scale for determining students’ grades. Some, perhaps, are not really familiar with how to utilize the weighted grading scale, and rather average students’ grades by giving all assignments equal weight, or they utilize the weighted scale and neglect to add all grades that comprise the whole of students’ averaged grades. For example, an instructor neglects to add quiz grades and bellwork that should comprise roughly 30% of students’ grades, and the students receive only 70% of what their actual grade should be.

If there are any actual instances where any components of weighted grades are obsolete because those particular assignments are not given, instructors should carry the worth percentile of those particular assignments over to another category. For example, if students were not given quizzes or bellwork, the percentile worth of the quizzes and bellwork could be carried over to the classwork category, so that the students receive 100% of their grades, whatever that actual grade might be.

It is also important to know/note that typically the weighted grading scale is not utilized in averaging students’ cumulative grade point averages for all of their classes as a whole, or Math would not comprise 10% of a student’s grade and each other subject a different percent. Students are neither typically graded on a 5.0 scale versus a 4.0 scale, unless they are or have been enrolled in honors or advanced placement (AP) classes… Rather, or in most cases, each individual grade for each class should be a wholesome weighted average, with the average grade for each individual class carrying equal weight with all others...
